Two short lines recently marked significant milestones.

The Modesto & Empire Traction Co. (M&ET) reached the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1911. On Oct. 7, 1911, M&ET was incorporated to become the operating company for the Modesto Interurban Railway.

The short line currently operates five miles of mainline and an additional 28 miles of industrial track serving the Beard Industrial District in Modesto, Calif. M&ET interchanges with BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad.

Meanwhile, the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad (A&M) marked its 25th anniversary. A&M was established in 1986 as a Class III railroad — spun off from the Burlington Northern Railroad — to operate a 150-mile route from Monett, Mo., to Fort Smith, Ark.

The railroad now operates about 140 miles of track in Arkansas and Missouri, and interchanges with BNSF, UP and Kansas City Southern.
