The North Carolina Railroad Co. has contributed a $50,000 endowment to the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) Educational Foundation.

Scott Saylor, president of the North Carolina Railroad, and James Kessler, AREMA's director of the passenger and transit functional group and the railroad's vice president of engineering and planning, presented the endowment to AREMA officials last week.

The endowment will allow a $1,000 annual scholarship to be awarded in perpetuity to an engineering student with an interest in railroad engineering.

"The North Carolina Railroad Company's more than 167-year mission is rooted in economic development," said Saylor in a press release. "Through this scholarship with AREMA, the North Carolina Railroad Company is making an important investment in the future of North Carolina's engineering workforce."
