The North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) recently announced it's investing $3.9 million into eight projects as part of its Build Ready Site program.

The program provides funds to projects that will improve available rail-served sites for future industrial development in North Carolina, NCRR officials said in a press release. The projects are designed to help attract business and encourage economic growth, they said.

The award recipients are: Beaufort County Industrial Park; Claremont International Rail Site in Catawba County; Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing Site in Chatham County; Midstate Development Center in Chatham County; Project Tin Cup in Iredell County; Candor Downtown Site in Montgomery County; 311 South Site in Randolph County; and Scotland Incubator Park in Scotland County.

Rail-served sites made "build ready" attract new businesses by priming properties for construction without an upfront investment from an interested client, NCRR officials said.

Funds can be used for land preparation, including clearing and grading and extending water and sewer capabilities. Selection criteria for the program prioritizes proposals from rural and economically distressed communities, sites with demonstrated community backing, and locations with support from railroads, utilities and other infrastructure partners.

Applications for the 2023 program will open in July and close in September.
