The Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad in Lakeville, New York, has been awarded $12.6 million in federal funds to rehabilitate six locomotives to meet higher environmental standards.

Issued through the Federal Railroad Administration's Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement Program (CRISI), the grant will fund the short line’s project to design, construct and rehabilitate the six Tier 0 locomotives to meet Tier 3 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission standards.

The upgraded locomotives will help the railroad save money and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, according to a press release.

"The grant will go a long way in helping us continue to service our customers and communities in the most environmentally friendly way possible," said Bob Babcock, the short line’s president and CEO.
