North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) will invest $200,000 in the construction of rail infrastructure that will serve a future housing and wood products manufacturing plant to be built in North Carolina.

NCRR is one of several partners that will assist Sumitomo Forestry America Inc.'s effort to open a 120,000-square-foot manufacturing operation and a 38,000-square-foot storage facility to serve subsidiary residential homebuilding markets in Archdale, North Carolina.

The site will require the installation of a mainline turnout and rail siding for the unloading of raw wood materials, NCRR officials said in a press release. NCRR will invest funding from its economic development initiative to help build the infrastructure that Norfolk Southern Railway will use to serve the new plant. The rail modifications will increase activity by 364 additional rail cars each year, NCRR officials said.

Sumitomo Forestry America is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Forestry Co. Ltd., a forestry company based in Tokyo. Charlotte-based Crescent Communities, another Sumitomo Forestry subsidiary, will help develop and build the production facility.
