Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals

ORDC awards $750,000 grant to Ohio short line

The funds will be used to install 5,707 feet of track at the Newark yard and two radio-controlled switch machines in Zanesville, where railroad employees currently have to dismount and manually switch the trains at interchanges.

The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) awarded a $750,000 grant to the Columbus & Ohio River Rail Road (CUOH) for infrastructure improvements.

The grant will help fund capacity improvements at the short line's primary classification yard in Newark and mitigate the possibility of blocked grade crossings in nearby Zanesville, ORDC officials said in a press release.

The $1.7 million project calls for the installation of 5,707 feet of track in the yard and two radio-controlled switch machines in Zanesville.

Newark yard crews sort rail cars for final distribution to local customers and for trains bound for interchange. CUOH officials anticipate 4,000 additional carloads in 2023 and 2024 because of semiconductor corporation Intel's plant construction in Licking County, ORDC officials said.

CUOH interchanges with the Ohio Central and Ohio Southern railroads. All three short lines are owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc.

Due to the interchange configuration, blocked crossings have posed longstanding problems because trains are required to come to a complete stop so that a railroad employee can dismount the train and manually operate the switch, ORDC officials said.

The radio-controlled switches will be installed at each interchange, allowing employees to remotely control the switching without stopping or dismounting.
