Brownsville and Rio Grande International Railway (BRG), an OmniTRAX affiliated railroad, this week marked its 40th year providing rail service to the Port of Brownsville, Texas.

BRG was formed in 1984 to serve the Brownsville Navigation District (BND), which manages the Port of Brownsville’s 40,000 acres. BND enlisted OmniTRAX to operate the 45 miles of rail lines within the port, OmniTRAX officials said in a press release. In the 40 years since BRG began serving the port, there has been a 400% increase in the port’s economic power, resulting in a $12 billion trade hub. In 2024, the port handled nearly 18 million tons of cargo.

BRG interchanges with Union Pacific Railroad, Canadian Pacific Kansas City and BNSF Railway Co. The short line transports steel, agricultural products, food products and other commodities into North American markets.

A delegation of state, local, economic and community officials joined port, OmniTRAX and BRG leaders for a 40th anniversary celebration at the port.
