Yesterday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett announced the state will provide $23 million in grants to help fund 16 freight-rail and short-line projects.
 
The grants are distributed through the Capital Budget/Transportation Assistance Program and administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Rail Freight, Ports and Waterways.

The grant amounts and recipients include:
• $3 million to Central New York Railroad to rehabilitate track and a rail bridge, including steel repairs, bridge timber replacements and track realignments on both ends of the bridge;
• $3 million to RJ Corman Railroad Group’s Pennsylvania Lines to rehabilitate three subdivisions and other track sections, and complete other trackwork, such as tie and switch installations;
• $3 million to the Delaware & Hudson Railway Co. to construct and rehabilitate track;
• $2 million to St. Marys Industrial Railroad to acquire land and right of way, and construct and rehabilitate track for the first phase of an expansion;
• $2 million to East Broad Top to acquire land and right of way, rehabilitate existing track, and build track and a transload facility;
• $2 million to Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County for the first phase of new track construction, including site excavation, grading and stormwater management facilities;
• $1.6 million to Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. to rehabilitate and expand track, prepare a transload area, and install new turnouts, track and ties;
• $1.5 million to Fay-Penn Industrial for the second phase of track construction for a transload facility in Smithfield;
• $1.1 million to Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corp. to complete the second phase of a project, including bridge work, new track installation, a new switch and drainage improvements;
• $700,000 to Wellsboro & Corning Railway Co. to rehabilitate track, install erosion and sedimentation control, and complete other track improvements;
• $560,000 to East Penn Railroad L.L.C. to rehabilitate track and a railroad bridge, install new ties, resurface track, install new bridge timbers and rehabilitate three grade crossings; and
• $490,000 to Aliquippa Ohio River Railroad to rehabilitate track, install new turnouts and ties, and complete other track improvements.
