R. J. Corman Railroad Group LLC this week started work on the Bluegrass multimodal freight improvement project in Frankfort, Kentucky, a $12.3 million initiative designed to modernize the short line’s central Kentucky lines.
The project is supported by a $7.4 million federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant, with R. J. Corman providing the remaining 40% of the total project cost, R.J. Corman officials said in a press release. A ground-breaking ceremony was held Nov. 6.
The project involves construction of a rail-to-truck transload facility in Frankfort, rehabilitation of track on the mainline between Frankfort and Lexington, and improvements to the main yard and transload facility in Lexington.
Over the next several decades, the new transload facility in Frankfort and projected increased utilization of the railroad are expected to divert over 130,000 truckloads from interstate and local roads to rail, R. J. Corman officials said.
