Late last year, R.J. Corman Switching Co. forged a partnership with Toyota Motor Manufacturing to provide rail-car switching, vehicle shuttling and loading, and track maintenance services at the automaker’s new Blue Springs, Miss., Corolla plant.
R.J. Corman Switching leased a 1,400-horsepower RP14BD GenSet locomotive from its sister company, R.J. Corman Railpower Locomotives, to help provide the services. The GenSet will enable the partners to reduce operating costs up to 55 percent via better fuel consumption and extended maintenance intervals, R.J. Corman Railroad Group officials said in a prepared statement.
The companies also expect to cut nitrous oxide emissions 90 percent by using Tier III-compliant off-highway Deutz engines, automatic engine idle reduction systems and other features unique to Railpower locomotives, they said.
