Late last year, Idaho Northern & Pacific Railroad Co. (INPR) implemented RMI's RailConnect® Transportation Management Services (TMS) — the 36th small road to deploy the software provider's Web-based system in 2003 and 200th during the past decade.
Owned and operated by Rio Grande Pacific Corp., the 210-mile INPR moves forest and timber products, chemicals and agricultural products. The short-line holding company also plans to replace personal computer-based systems with TMS at its three other short lines — the 250-mile Nebraska Central Railroad Co., 100-mile Wichita, Tillman & Jackson Railway Inc., and 24-mile New Orleans & Gulf Coast Railway Co. — to enable all managers to access operating data from any railroad 24/7.
A software suite, RailConnect is designed to enable railroads to electronically manage day-to-day business, and improve communication with other railroads and transportation companies. By using TMS, railroads can monitor yard and inventory control, manage train operations, provide Electronic Data Interchange, and maintain work orders and operational management reports.
"RMI provides a practical and cost-effective solution to outsourcing many of the manual, paper-driven processes, so that short line and regional railroads can effectively compete and provide value-add services to their customers," said RMI Vice President of Marketing Paul Pascutti in a prepared statement.
