Last month, RailAmerica Inc.’s carloads rose 2.5 percent to 109,287 units compared with August 2004. On a “same railroad” basis — excluding carloads associated with railroads or portions of roads sold or acquired after Jan. 1 — the short-line holding company’s monthly carloads also bested last year’s mark, increasing 2 percent to 108,150 units.

During 2005’s first eight months, RailAmerica’s total carloads and same railroad carloads rose 6.4 percent to 868,394 units and 2.2 percent to 828,644 units, respectively, compared with the same 2004 period. The company owns and operates 43 regionals and short lines in the Unites States and Canada.

Meanwhile, Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) monthly North American carloads totaled 67,141, a 21.8 percent increase compared with August 2004. Through the third quarter to date (July and August), the short-line holding company’s carloads rose 23.4 percent to 133,354 units on a year-over-year basis.

In Australia, GWI’s half-owned subsidiary boosted August and quarter-to-date carloads 4.2 percent to 80,986 units and 2.0 percent to 161,270 units, respectively, compared with similar 2004 periods.

GWI owns and operates 47 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Bolivia, including 39 U.S. roads.
