RailAmerica entices shippers to build, expand plants along its lines

In 2011’s first half, 34 customers announced plans to build, expand or reopen facilities along lines operated by RailAmerica Inc.-owned railroads, according to the short-line holding company. When the industrial development is completed over the next 12 to 18 months, the plants will generate more than 25,000 carloads annually, RailAmerica estimates.

The industrial development team works to increase carloads by attracting facilities to sites on the company’s rail lines and helping current customers expand their existing plants, RailAmerica officials said in a prepared statement.

By offering sites along 7,400 track miles and 43 U.S. and Canadian railroads, in-house logistics services, and railroad engineering and construction services provided by subsidiary Atlas Railroad Construction Co., RailAmerica can offer customers “a unique and broad set of capabilities to address virtually all aspects of new project development,” they said.

“The environmental benefits, energy-cost savings and overall efficiency of rail transportation are all compelling drivers of continued development on our railroads,” said RailAmerica Vice President of Industrial Development Gary Lewis.
