RailAmerica registers carload gains in April

advertisement

Yesterday, RailAmerica Inc. announced its April carloads totaled 111,993 units, a 9.8 percent increase compared with April 2004. On a "same railroad" basis, April carloads rose 5 percent to 106,441 units. The same railroad total excludes carloads associated with railroads or portions of railroads sold or acquired by RailAmerica after Jan. 1, 2004.

The same railroad increase was driven by bridge traffic — which accounted for more than half the additional carloads — and traffic gains in nine of 14 commodity groups. Auto and intermodal traffic registered the largest monthly drops on a year-over-year basis.

During 2005’s first four months, RailAmerica’s carloads increased 9.5 percent to 441,872 units compared with the same 2004 period. Same railroad carloads totaling 419,689 units rose 4.7 percent.

RailAmerica owns and operates 43 regionals and short lines in the United States and Canada.
