Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals
Last month, RailAmerica Inc.’s carloads totaled 112,360 units, a 2.3 percent increase compared with October 2004. On a “same railroad” basis — excluding carloads associated with railroads or portions of railroads sold or acquired after Jan. 1, 2004 — the short-line holding company’s October carloads rose 0.3 percent to 109,484 units.
Carload gains were driven by metallic/non-metallic ores, up 21.9 percent; metals, up 19.2 percent; and minerals, up 13.6 percent compared with October 2004. However, intermodal, agricultural and farm product, and auto moves dropped 17.5 percent, 7.8 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively.
During 2005’s first 10 months, RailAmerica’s railroads moved 1.08 million carloads, a 5.7 percent increase compared with the same 2004 period. Same railroad carloads rose 2 percent to 1.04 million units.
RailAmerica owns and operates 47 regionals and short lines in the United States and Canada.
