Today, RailAmerica Inc. reported May carloads totaling 109,648 units, a 10.3 percent increase compared with May 2004. On a "same railroad" basis — excluding carloads associated with railroads sold or acquired after Jan. 1, 2004 — the short-line holding company’s May carloads rose 5.5 percent to 104,095 units.

The carload increase was driven by bridge traffic, which helped offset reduced auto moves. Ten of 14 commodity groups posted carload increases.

During 2005’s first five months, RailAmerica’s carloads totaled 551,520 units, a 9.6 percent increase compared with the same 2004 period. On a same railroad basis, carloads rose 4.8 percent to 523,784 units.

RailAmerica owns and operates 43 regionals and short lines in the United States and Canada.
