RailAmerica's carloads drop in July
advertisement
Today, RailAmerica Inc. reported its July carloads totaled 102,158 units, a 2.4 percent decrease compared with July 2004. On a "same railroad" basis, monthly carloads decreased 7.1 percent to 96,667 units compared with the same 2004 period.
RailAmerica officials attribute the decline to a drop in 11 of 14 commodity groups, fewer coal shipments from the Powder River Basin, and a recently implemented routing protocol between Canadian National Railway Co. and Norfolk Southern Railway.
During 2005’s first seven months, carloads increased 7 percent to 759,107 units compared with the same 2004 period. "Same railroad" carloads totaling 720,494, units rose 2.3 percent.
RailAmerica owns and operates 43 regionals and short lines in the United States and Canada.
