The Reading & Northern Railroad has acquired a 19-mile line from Carbon County, Pennsylvania.
The acquisition gives Reading & Northern a continuous mainline between Reading and Scranton. The Port Clinton-based railroad said in a press release it is paying $4.7 million for the route.
As part of the acquisition, Reading & Northern will continue to honor a lease with the current freight operator of the line, the C&S Railroad. C&S will continue to provide freight service to the three local customers. R&N will continue to use the line for overhead freight traffic and its very popular passenger excursion trains.
Obtaining the line fulfills a 30-year dream for founder Andy Muller, Reading & Northern officials said.
