The Reading & Northern Railroad (R&N) announced it has donated $10,000 to the town of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, to help the community during the pandemic.
The Tamaqua Borough Council allocated the funds to Tamaqua’s first responders. Seven emergency services will share the donation.
The donation was part of R&N owner and Chief Executive Officer Andy Muller Jr.’s plan — announced earlier this year — to donate $10,000 per year over the next two years to Tamaqua for charities of the town's choice.
Muller decided to give the first donation of $10,000 early to help the community, R&N officials said in a press release.
In February, R&N entered into an agreement with Tamaqua to bring passenger trains back to the town's train station. Muller paid $20,000 to fund the construction of a new passenger platform at the station. Construction is expected to begin this year.
R&N operates both freight services and excursion passenger services in eastern Pennsylvania.
