The Reading & Northern Railroad yesterday announced its efforts to update the former KME properties in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania, which the railroad acquired in 2022.
Many Reading & Northern departments already have established a presence at the campus, which is situated in the middle of the mainline between Reading and Scranton. Tracks are under construction to lead into select existing buildings, some of which will be used to service the company’s fleet of 63 diesel locomotives. Other company vehicles — from automobiles to large trucks — will be serviced and maintained at the campus, Reading & Northern officials said in a press release.
Other buildings house maintenance of way, signals, real estate and passenger departments. More than 30 people now work at the campus.
Reading & Northern plans to introduce the Nesquehoning Regional Railroad Station later in 2024. Plans for a station platform are underway, as well as an additional main track to accommodate more train traffic. This will create opportunities for new excursion routes, Reading & Northern officials said.
The railroad also plans to relaunch the Black Diamond Company Store based at the Nesquehoning campus. The store has already established an online platform, Reading & Northern officials said.
