Reading and Northern to become Pennsylvania industrial park's service provider

Late last month, the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad Co. (RBMN) announced it entered into an agreement with CAN DO Inc. that will lead to an eventual transfer of a rail system in the Humboldt Industrial Park in Hazelton, Pa., to RBMN. The deal follows months of negotiations, RBMN officials said in a prepared statement.

CAN DO built and maintains the park’s 7.5-mile rail line, and Norfolk Southern Railway currently provides rail service under a contract that runs through 2016. Per the CAN DO agreement, RBMN will replace NS as the service provider after the contract expires.

“We are very excited about adding CAN DO’s … track to the 320 miles we already own and look forward to ownership of the track in the future,” said RBMN owner Andrew Muller Jr.

Currently, more than 15 industries use the park’s rail service. RBMN plans to open an office in Hazleton, “where our employees will work to market rail service to existing companies and will seek other companies needing rail service that may want to locate to the Humboldt park,” said RBMN President Wayne Michel.

RBMN interchanges with NS, Canadian Pacific, the Shamokin Valley Railroad, Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad, Luzerne and Susquehanna Railway Co. and Lehigh Railway L.L.C.
