Rio Grande selects engineering, construction firms for Uinta Basin rail project

Rio Grande Pacific Corp., through its Rio Grande Pacific Group portfolio company Basin Railway Constructors LLC, last week selected the engineering and construction firms for the final engineering and construction of the Uinta Basin Railway.

The engineering and construction firms are AECOM, Skanska-WW Clyde Joint Venture and Obayashi Corp., RGPC officials said in a press release.

A key selection criterion was the commitment of AECOM, Skanska-Clyde and Obayashi to a tribal and local hiring preference, and to include within their teams the construction and engineering firms located within the Uinta Basin and the counties of the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition.

The 85-mile railway will provide the first-ever common-carrier rail service to northeastern Utah’s Uinta Basin region. The Surface Transportation Board in December 2021 authorized construction and operation of the railway. When completed, it will serve the mineral, energy, agriculture, construction and manufacturing industries in the Uinta Basin.

The Seven County Infrastructure Coalition — a political subdivision of the state of Utah — initiated the project in 2018. The Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation is an equity partner of the railway.
