Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals

STB issues final environmental analysis for proposed Texas short line

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) yesterday issued the final environmental analysis for a proposed 2.6-mile rail line in Webb County, Texas, that would connect to a Union Pacific Railroad mainline and serve a new industrial park near Laredo, Texas.

The proposed Laredo Gateway Industrial Railway LLC (LGIR) was established by parent company Kraus Development to serve its Gateway Industrial Park, which is under development. Located near the U.S.-Mexico border, the 3,300-acre park will feature warehousing and transloading services for commodities shipped by truck and, if the line is approved, rail.

The final environmental analysis responds to three comments received on the draft analysis and establishes recommendations from the STB's office of environmental analysis. None of the comments resulted in any revisions to the analysis.

The STB will now consider transportation merits, the environmental and historic record of the LGIR prior to making a decision on whether to authorize the construction and operation.
