OmniTRAX Inc. subsidiary Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad (STE) was awarded a $1.8 million grant from the California Transportation Commission's Short-line Railroad Improvement Program to replace and repair more than 4 miles of track in Stockton, California.
The project is designed to increase operational efficiency and rail operations, as well as preserve and improve transload capacity to meet increased demand, OmniTRAX President Sergio Sabatini said in a press release.
"The project will also significantly reduce costs, emissions and truck travel in the region," Sabatini said.
The San Joaquin Council of Governments proposed the grant to help the STE modernize its infrastructure to handle the influx of alternative diesel fuels that comply with California low-carbon fuel standards. Specifically, the project calls for replacing rail ties and six grade crossing surfaces, and rehabilitating degraded switches.
Work is expected to be completed this year.
The $1.8 million grant to STE will cover half the project's cost, with the remainder coming from OmniTRAX.
