Tradepoint Atlantic marks opening of FedEx distribution center

Tradepoint Atlantic, Gov. Larry Hogan and other local officials gathered last week for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new FedEx Ground Distribution Center in Sparrows Point, Maryland.

The freight shipper was the first major company to open a facility at Tradepoint Atlantic, a 3,100-acre multimodal global logistics center, which provides access to railroads, highways, deepwater berths and storage.

Tradepoint Atlantic operates a short line in the park with access to CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.

The new facility connects existing FedEx Ground stations in White Marsh and Halethorpe, and will support a mix of 275 full- and part-time jobs with the company in addition to 150 contracted service providers. The land will occupy 50 acres within the northwest portion of the park.

"FedEx Ground was in many ways the ideal first tenant, as the prominence of its global brand helped prove the concept to the wider marketplace of Tradepoint Atlantic as a 21st century hub for global logistics and commerce," said Tradepoint Atlantic Chief Development Officer Eric Gilbert in a press release. "Given our unmatched combination of assets, coupled with unwavering support from all levels of government, we believe many more businesses will seek to consolidate their operations at Tradepoint Atlantic."

FedEx began developing the facility in 2014.
