Traffic: New York & Atlantic anticipates another record-breaking year after setting high-water mark in 2003

Last year, New York & Atlantic Railway Co. (NY&A) set an annual carload record at 16,444 units, breaking the previous record of 13,746 units set in 2000 by almost 20 percent, according to the 240-mile short line's June newsletter. The railroad moved more carloads of outbound scrap and waste materials, and inbound food and beverage products.

Now, carload levels indicate 2004 will be another banner traffic-growth year.

To handle increasing traffic, NY&A recently acquired one GP-10 and two SW-1200 locomotives from sister Anacostia & Pacific Co.-owned short line Louisville & Indiana Railroad Co. The three units increased NY&A's fleet to 14 locomotives.

"[Because] additional locomotives have been acquired, new train and engine-service employees are in training and more new customers will be coming on line … I am confident that 2004 will be another record-breaker for NY&A," said President Fred Krebs.
