Rail and water transportation provider Transtar recently signed a five-year contract with RMI to use the supplier's Transportation Management Services and Revenue Management Services systems for operational and accounting functions at its five subsidiary railroads. RMI will provide the services through its Web-based portal RailConnect®.

Transtar also will begin using RMI's electronic ShipperConnect system at five railroads to improve communication with shippers and develop automated interfaces with some customers.

"We have been investigating a means of modernizing our legacy car control and accounting systems for a couple of years now," said John Pranaitis, Transtar president and managing director of transportation, in a prepared statement.

A U.S. Steel Corp. subsidiary, Transtar owns and operates Union Railroad Co., Birmingham Southern Railroad Co., Lake Terminal Railroad Co., McKeesport Connecting Railroad Co., and Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co.
