The Delmarva Central Railroad (DCR) hosted a Nov. 12 visit from U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), who viewed the short line's operations.
Carper was joined by Seaford, Delaware, Mayor David Genshaw and Sussex County Commissioner Michael Vincent, as well as representatives from Perdue Agribusiness, GoRail and the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).
The group visited the short line’s transload facility in Seaford, which opened in 2019, and viewed the DCR's swing bridge modernization project.
DCR connects to the nation's rail network through an interchange with Norfolk Southern Railway and is a critical part of the Delmarva Peninsula broiler chicken industry, according to a press release issued by GoRail.
The short line's transload facility allows rail-to-truck transloading. The swing bridge project would help preserve Sussex County as a hub for grain and chicken producers in the future, officials said. DCR operates 188 miles of track across Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
