Washingtion state's Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) has approved a $40,000 grant to Tacoma Rail for the installation of protective fencing along the railroad's Mountain Division Line.

The funds come from the state’s Grade Crossing Protective Fund. Tacoma Rail estimates the project will cost $60,872,  UTC officials said in a press release.

After applying the grant funds, the short line will cover the remaining cost. Galvanized chain-link fencing will be installed along the west side of the tracks to prevent vehicles and pedestrians from trespassing and accessing a nearby encampment.

The project improvements will soon begin between East 65th and East 68th streets west of East McKinley Avenue in Tacoma.
