Watco Cos. LLC recently won an award from insurance carrier The American Equity Underwriters (AEU) for its safety efforts when handling marine cargo.

The short-line holding company received the stevedoring safety award at a ceremony held at a terminal in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Award criteria includes incident frequency and severity, and accident prevention controls that are in place.

“To achieve this, we were one of six companies, out of nearly 1,000 chosen by the AEU, for their safety award,” said Watco Risk Manager Steven Renn in a Dispatch Blog item posted on the company’s website July 3. “It goes to every location where we have marine cargo handling — where we have United States longshore and harbor workers exposure, or the loading and unloading of large vessels.”

Watco’s stevedoring operations last year included work performed at facilities in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

Each location will receive a plaque and each team member will receive a certificate of achievement to commemorate the award, Watco officials said.
