Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals

Weyerhaeuser seeks 'strategic alternatives' for short line subsidiaries

As part of an ongoing portfolio restructuring, Weyerhaeuser Co. is exploring strategic alternatives for its four short lines and Westwood Shipping Line.

The company owns the DeQueen & Eastern Railroad Co., Columbia & Cowlitz Railway Co., Mississippi and Skuna Valley Railroad, and Golden Triangle Railroad that operate in Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Washington. The railroads primarily serve Weyerhaeuser's paper mills, as well as some third-party customers, the company said.

Weyerhaeuser will continue to operate the railroads and Westwood Shipping Line — which moves forest products and containerized/oversized cargo in four ocean vessels — during the transition. The company has not set a timetable for identifying or implementing the strategic alternatives, which might include selling the short lines.
