Portugal’s Rede Ferroviária Nacional (REFER) recently awarded a contract to Alcatel Transport Automation Solutions to design, supply and install a signaling and telecommunications system for Portugal’s north-south rail line.

The system is part of the "25 de Abril" bridge-crossing modernization, which is designed to enable REFER to upgrade the line and offer improved service to passengers, according to a prepared statement.

Alcatel will install its 6111 LockTrac Electronic Interlocking System and NetTrac Control Center, and other communications services, such as audio and visual passenger information, and a station video security system.

The project is expected to be complete in 2005.
