• Skanska has obtained a contract worth $208 billion from the Department of Transportation in Prague to perform construction work on the Prague subway extension project. Skanska will handle the energy installations and equip the system with air-conditioning, low voltage and communication systems, according to the company. Skanska’s work is scheduled to be completed by September 2014.

• Ansaldo STS has obtained a contract worth $16.7 million to supply Alstom Power and Transport Canada Inc. with cab signaling systems for the STM MPM-10 project in Montreal. Ansaldo will provide the latest version of its MicroCab® system to Alstom, which, in a consortium with Bombardier Transportation North America, will provide the Montreal Metro with 468 new MPM-10 cars. Ansaldo STS will supply MicroCab ATP/ATP/SESAM systems for STM’s new MPM-10 trains. The complete train control system is referred to as ATC/SESAM systems.

• Alstom Transport and Russian partner Transmashholding have confirmed the design for a jointly-created electric train, which would provide a solution to renewing Russia’s regional and suburban fleets, according to Alstom. The electric train will be designed to include four to 12 coaches and operate at speeds up to 99 mph. It will operate according to the multiple unit system on both tracks with high and low platforms. The first prototype is scheduled to roll off the production line in late 2012.

• Bombardier Transportation has marked the departure of the 700th Autorail Grande Capacite regional train from the company’s workshops in Crespin, France. The 700th train represents the last in the largest train series in France in recent years. It will travel on the Region TER network, according to Bombardier.

• Saft will provide lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology to supply megawatt level energy storage for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s recycled energy and optimization project. The project is designed to capture energy from rail cars through a regenerative braking process and reuse the energy for accelerating trains. Saft will provide one Intensium Max20 Li-ion megawatt energy storage system to capture train braking energy, then discharge it back to the third rail to power trains leaving the station.

• APS Technology Group Inc., which provides optical character recognition and process automation technology solutions for intermodal and marine terminals, has obtained a multi-phased automation project for Ports America Chesapeake Seagirt Marine Terminal in Baltimore. APS will automate various functions in conjunction with the out-gate, in-gate and STS Crane operations to improve efficiency and safety, and reduce operating costs, according to the company.
