• Alstom has obtained a $461 million contract from Germany’s Deutsche Bahn to supply 56 Coradia Lint regional trains, which are slated to enter service in December 2013 on mostly non-electrified lines in greater Cologne and the Eifel region. The two- and three-train multiple units will be manufactured at Alstom’s Salzgitter, Germany, plant.

• Kelso Technologies Inc. has “substantially completed” the first stage of a market introduction for its Klincher™ Manway Securement System (MSS), according to the company. The initial marketing plan called for introducing prototypes of the MSS to regulators and key representatives and customers in the railroad industry. Kelso has made presentations to the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, railroads and companies that ship hazardous materials via rail, Kelso officials said in a prepared statement. The company is now moving into the sales and distribution phase for the MSS.

• Michael Lam has joined HDR’s New York City office as transit systems section manager. He previously spent 14 years with STV, where he was an associate and traction power manager. Prior to STV, he was division engineer with MTA New York City Transit. Lam has more than 30 years of experience in rail and rapid transit systems engineering design, project management, specification preparation and construction management.

• The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) recently held its annual equipment auction at Harsco Rail in Fairmont, Minn. Event proceeds will go toward the NRC’s safety and education training program, as well to the Smile Train organization in memory of the late Mark Meyer of Balfour Beatty Rail, a former auction committee chairman. Along with consignments from dozens of contractors, suppliers and railroads, equipment donations to the auction came from Auto Truck Group, Balfour Beatty Rail, Nordco, RailWorks Corp. and Stanley/Black & Decker.
