• A consortium of French, Greek and Italian companies including Alstom Transport S.A. has obtained a $451.5 million contract from Attiko Metro, the owner of the Athens metro infrastructure in Greece, to build a 4.7-mile extension of the Athens metro Line 3 to the Port of Piraeus. Also in the consortium are J&P Avax S.A. and Ghella S.p.A. The project includes six new stations and is expected to be completed by 2017.

• On March 2, Siemens began shipping the first of its regional multiple-unit trains destined for Russia. From the Sassnitz ferry port on the German island of Ruegen, Siemens embarked the first of 38 Desiro RUS regional-unit trains bound for the Saint Petersburg area. A ferry is carrying a five-unit train via the Baltic Sea to the seaport of Ust-Luga in Russia, Siemens officials said in a prepared statement. Arrival is scheduled for tomorrow, with testing slated to begin in April.

• Harsco Corp.’s Harsco Rail unit has obtained U.S. and international orders for its track maintenance services, equipment and parts business totaling more than $25 million. The new equipment, slated for delivery this year and in early 2013, will serve customers in the United States, Canada and Australia, Harsco officials said in a prepared statement. The orders include track surfacing equipment, including Mark VI ballast tempers, ballast regulators and track stabilizers.

• Balfour Beatty Construction has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications for its office buildings in Charlotte, N.C., and Fairfax, Va., the company announced in a press release. In Fairfax, the firm’s North Region achieved Gold certification under the LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED C-I) rating system for its new headquarters at the Bridgewater Corporate Center. In Charlotte, the Carolinas Division achieved LEED C-I Silver certification for its new headquarters in the city’s historic south end. LEED for Commercial Interiors is the U.S. Green Building Council’s rating system applicable to tenant improvements in new or existing office space.

• KONE has been chosen by Jones Lang LaSalle and the Union Station Redevelopment Corp. (USRC) to supply 18 new escalators in Union Station in Washington, D.C. The escalator modernization project was designed by Newmont Elevator Analysts Inc. Joint contracts with Jones Lang LaSalle and the USRC call for KONE to supply eight escalators for the station and 10 for the adjoining garage and bus terminal. The joint award also includes a three-year maintenance agreement.

• Yesterday, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s (MARTA) board approved a design-build contract with URS Corp. for the Atlanta streetcar project, MARTA officials said in a prepared statement. An engineering, construction and technical services firm, URS has been involved in streetcar projects in Portland, Ore.; Tucson, Ariz.; Dallas; Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma, Wash.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Tampa, Fla. The board also awarded a contract to Apollo Video Technology to install security cameras on MARTA’s entire fleet of rail cars, buses and mobility vehicles.
