• Bombardier Transportation will deliver 16 Bombardier Twindexx Vario multiple units to Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) for operation on the Kiel-Hamburg and Flensburg-Hamburg rail lines in Germany, according to a company press release. The order, which is valued at $208 million, is part of an agreement between Bombardier and DB AG that dates back to December 2008. The 16 four-car Twindexx Vario trains will consist of two double-deck power cars and two intermediate coaches. The trains are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2014.
    
• Hanson Professional Services Inc., as a subconsultant to CDG Engineers Architects Planners Inc., recently provided design-engineering services for Xcel Energy Services’ rail spur project in Hayden, Colo., according to a press release. Hanson provided preliminary and final bridge design services along with bidding and construction-related services for four bridges on a new spur, including a rail bridge over U.S. Highway 40.  Hanson also was responsible for reviewing the design, specifications, construction cost estimates and construction schedule for the rail layout. The bridges conform with Union Pacific Railroad’s bridge design requirements, Hanson officials said.
    
• T-Mobile USA Inc. has provided new wireless service on the Blue and Green lines of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) subway system (The T) in Boston, including stations serving Hynes Convention Center, Fenway Park, TD Garden, Copley Square, Boston Public Library, New England Aquarium, Boston Common and Boston Public Garden. With the expansion, T-Mobile has nearly doubled its underground service to 13 miles of coverage and 26 underground stops on The T station platforms and coaches, according to a press release. T-Mobile first provided service to The T in 2007 and will continue to partner with InSite Wireless and MBTA to expand service to the remaining subway lines.

• CANARAIL has obtained a $4 million contract for the implementation of the second phase of the major railway study in Africa. The contact is funded primarily by the African Development Bank, through the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RPPA that represents Rwanda’s, Burundi’s and Tanzania’s transportation ministries. The proposed project entails construction of a new rail line between Isaka, Tanzania; Kigali, Rwanda; and Musongati, Burundi. It includes the upgrading of existing infrastructure between Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and Isaka. The project’s primary goal is to accommodate an increase in freight transport and potentially passengers.
 
 • VTG Aktiengesellschaft, a European rail-car hire and rail logistics company, reported revenue rose to $1 billion in fiscal-year 2011. Net profit, adjusted for refinancing costs, dropped by $3 million to $23.9 million, mainly due to higher interest expenses, company officials said in a prepared statement. In 2011, the Railcar Division registered a continued increase in capacity utilization, fleet acquisitions in the rail-freight markets and orders for 2,500 new rail cars.
