• Invensys Rail’s PHW subsidiary has obtained a subcontract to install a microprocessor-based positive train control system on all of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) rail vehicles. SEPTA’s PTC system will be based on the ACSES II system. The ACSES OBC will be combined with PHW’s 9-Aspect ATC equipment, which will replace the existing cab signal system installed on the SEPTA vehicles.

• RailComm has obtained a contract to supply a wireless remote control derail system for Amtrak’s Seattle facility. The power derails will be remotely controlled by two strategically located control panels, RailComm officials said in a press release. The system will include two workstations that will enable managers to view the state of the facility at any given time. RailComm’s 2.4 GHz Spread Spectrum RADiANT™ data radios will be used to establish wireless communications networks to link the derail and control panel locations.

• Las Vegas Railway Express Inc. (X Train) has executed an agreement with a private owner to acquire its first set of passenger rail cars for the X Train project, which will provide passenger-rail service between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Terms of the cash purchase were not disclosed. The 10-car trainset will undergo refurbishment scheduled to begin early next year. It will be the first of several trainsets that will undergo extensive renovations, X Train officials said.

• Peter Cipolla, senior vice president and business development director for rail and transit at Hatch Mott MacDonald, has been inducted into the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) Hall of Fame. The honor recognizes individuals “who have long and distinguished careers in the industry, have made extraordinary contributions to public transportation, and have actively participated in APTA activities,” according to a Hatch Mott MacDonald press release. Cipolla has been an active APTA member, serving on several committees as well as a board member.  He served on the Executive Committee for eight years. Additionally, he was a member of the Business Member Board of Governors for four years, and served on the American Public Transportation Foundation. He also chaired APTA in 2001-02.
