Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

Rail supplier updates from Bombardier, Alstom, Railserve, Raildecks, Colo and Road & Rail (Sept. 27)

Bombardier Transportation has obtained a $165 million contract from Flemish Transport operator De Lijn to supply 48 Bombardier Flexity 2 trams for the cities of Ghent and Antwerp. The order includes an option for another 40 trams. Also, Bombardier announced Israel Railways has ordered another 72 double-deck coaches as part of a framework agreement signed in October 2010. The new order is valued at about $158 million.

Alstom Transport won an order from Ferrovie Nord Milano, the Lombardy regional railway operator in Italy, for 10 additional Coradia Meridian regional trains. Worth about $68 million, the order is part of a frame agreement signed in 2008.

Railserve has delivered a LEAF® Gen-Set locomotive to Fairmount Minerals at its Wisconsin Industrial Sand Co. facility in Maiden Rock, Wis. Fairmount Minerals recently constructed a new extended rail spur and load-out station as part of its mineral mining and processing facility. The LEAF is designed to reduce nitrous oxide emissions by 84 percent and fuel consumption by 50 percent compared with a conventional locomotive, Railserve officials said in a prepared statement.

Raildecks Intermodal recently received a U.S. patent for its collapsible flat rack intermodal container. It is the first patent issued to Raildecks for its collapsible flat rack intermodal container design, according to a company press release. Raildecks has additional patent applications in the United States as well as multiple foreign patent applications pending.

Colo Railroad Builders has appointed Conrad McMillin director of operations in the Chicago division. He has more than 32 years of railroad construction and operations experience. Most recently, McMillin served as director of engineering for Hulcher Services in St. Louis. He previously held management positions at Railworks, Balfour Beatty Rail and Lonestar. Colo also announced its Texas division recently worked 1,000 days without an injury.

Road & Rail Services recently marked its 25th anniversary. The company provides plant and terminal operating services, and field maintenance services for rail assets managed by railroads, shippers and rail equipment owners. Company officials also announced that for the second consecutive year, Road & Rail was awarded the American Honda Motors' Processor of the Year Award as well as Gulf States Toyota's Quality Excellence Award.
