Rail supplier news from Arcadis, American Railcar, Thales, Huber+Suhner, Ricardo and Hanson (Dec. 4)

Consulting firm Arcadis announced it has been selected by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's New York City Transit to restore the city's subway system to pre-Sandy conditions and protect it against future storms. Under the five-year, $26 million task order contract, Arcadis will produce and implement innovative flood resiliency designs for subway stations, tunnels, bus depots, public areas, and more for North America's largest transportation network, according to a company press release.

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry honored American Railcar Industries Inc. last month with the 2014 Missouri Fast Track award, which recognizes Missouri companies that have shown outstanding growth over the last three years. "The award is a source of great pride to our company," said Jeff Hollister, president of American Railcar, in a press release. "In 2012 and 2013, we experienced record years for net earnings at $63.8 million and $86.9 million, respectively. With net earnings of $76.8 million for the nine-month period ended Sept. 30, 2014, we believe we are on track for a third year of record earnings."

Thales revenue collection solutions have been selected for the urban transit systems in Bordeaux and Delhi. The Bordeaux contract is Thales's first major award for an entirely contactless ticketing system in France, where the company will deploy a latest-generation ticketing and revenue collection solution for all of Bordeaux's public transport systems. Also, Thales has been selected for Phase 3 of the Delhi metro, which includes 79 new stations and 87 miles of new metro lines. The company will provide a complete automatic fare collection system as well as ticketing equipment.

Huber+Suhner has been recognized by Hitachi Rail Europe with a key supplier award for its contribution to the Intercity Express Program (IEP), which will bring new Class 800/801 trains to two of the United Kingdom's major rail routes. Huber+Suhner is supplying a range of RADOX^® cables and SENCITY^® rail antennas for use in the train control and safety systems. Under the UK Department of Transport’s IEP project, Hitachi Rail Europe is replacing older diesel-powered high-speed trains on the Great Western and East Coast Main Line routes across the United Kingdom with a fleet of 122 new Class 800/801 trains which go into service from 2017 to 2018.

The DDflyTrain project, on which Ricardo is collaborating with Artemis Intelligent Power Ltd. and Bombardier Transportation, received the award for the Most Interesting Initiative in Safety and Sustainability at the Nov. 29 Rail Exec gala. The Rail Exec "Most Interesting Awards" recognize unique ways that companies move freight and people safely and efficiently by rail. The DDflyTrain project was recognized in the safety and sustainability category for its research into the combined application of Ricardo's TorqStor high speed flywheel energy storage system and the Artemis Digital Displacement^® hydraulic pump-motor transmission, on diesel multiple unit trains, according to a Ricardo press release.

Civil and railroad engineer Stephen Gaudette recently marked 20 years of service at Hanson Professional Services Inc.'s Chicago regional office. Gaudette joined the company in 1994. He provides design services and project management for civil, track, drainage and utility projects in the railroad industry. He has worked on multiple design and construction projects, including for BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad intermodal facilities, and was a project engineer for preliminary and environmental services for the Chicago Regional Environmental and Transportation Efficiency Program (CREATE) Beltway Corridor in Chicago.
