Rail supplier news from Bombardier, Protran, Avtec, Arcadis, WSP and CHA (July 28)

Bombardier posted second-quarter revenue of $4.1 billion, down from $4.3 billion during the same period in 2016. The company's adjusted net income was $39 million versus an adjusted net loss of $83 million during the same period last year. The firm reported adjusted earnings per share of 2 cents versus a 6 cent adjusted loss per share in 2016. Bombardier Transportation — the company's rail segment — logged revenue of $1.98 billion compared with $1.96 billion. The news comes as the rail segment's "operational transformation and site specialization strategy" continues to gain traction, said Bombardier officials. The entire company is in the midst of executing a five-year plan to improve operating margins.

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver has placed its second major contract for Protran Technology's Advance Warning and Collision Avoidance Systems. Protran's product portfolio includes the Protracker Train Device, which is mounted in the cab of a train or tied into the train's monitor. The train operator will receive audible and visual alerts of nearby personnel wearing the Protracker Personal Alert Device.

Brightline has hired Avtec Inc. to deploy its Scout™ dispatch console system for the railroad's passenger service in southeastern Florida. Avtec will install the technology at multiple sites in Brightline's main dispatch center in Miami, as well as at the railroad's maintenance facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. Once deployed, Scout will provide dispatcher communications with train engineers for track usage authorizations and locomotive movements. Scout has a 70 percent market share among Class Is. The technology is used at numerous transit agencies that offer rail service, Avtec officials said in a press release.

Arcadis has acquired E2 ManageTech, a firm providing information technology and business services for the environmental, health and safety (EHS) market. Financial terms were not disclosed. Development of EHS-related strategies is a "rapidly growing market segment," Arcadis officials said in a press release. E2 Chief Executive Officer Vijay Gudivaka will lead Arcadis' North American and global enterprise technology solutions for EHS sustainability. 

WSP USA appointed Kevin Cox vice president to provide leadership, management and technical support for U.S. transit and rail projects. Cox has 25 years of rail industry experience, including a stint managing the Utah Transit Authority's FrontLines 2015 program. Meanwhile, WSP USA named Stephen Bonina VP in the firm's Newark, New Jersey, office. In the role, Bonina serves as the Eastern region fleet manager for WSP's transit and rail technical excellence center. He oversees management of the rail vehicle practice in Newark, Boston and Atlanta. Bonina's prior experience includes stints as a senior executive with a rail vehicle manufacturer and as an engineering manager at a Class I.

CHA Consulting Inc. has hired Robert Harvey as transportation leader for the firm's national rail market and the New York City metro region. He'll lead efforts to expand CHA's rail project portfolio, oversee rail project delivery across the United States and lead transportation market activities in the New York City area. Harvey joins the company with more than 20 years of experience in transportation and rail infrastructure markets. He has worked on transit and rail stations and systems for MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA New York City Transit and the Port Authority Trans-Hudson passenger-rail system.
