The Greenbrier Cos. Inc. reported new rail-car orders for 8,500 units valued at $930 million and deliveries of 4,800 units in the second quarter of its 2022 fiscal year, which ended Feb. 28. The diversified new rail-car backlog as of Feb. 28 was 32,100 units with a value of $3.6 billion. Net earnings attributable to Greenbrier for the quarter were $13 million, or 38 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $683 million.
Balfour Beatty has promoted Sarah Brand to vice president of business acquisition for national operations. In this role, Brand is responsible for the development and support of strategic pursuits. Her primary focus is with federal acquisition. She also supports public-private partnership programs with the company's buildings and investments operations, and is active in researching U.S. rail opportunities and partnerships. Brand joined the company in 2008.
Societe de transport de Montreal awarded Thales a contract extension to provide new computer-based interlocking systems to eight additional metro stations, which will complete the upgrades across all lines of the rapid transit system in Montreal. The original contract, awarded in 2018 to Thales, included replacing the signaling equipment across eight stations and garages. Thales now will be supplying new technology to a total of 16 stations and depots. This project aims to improve the technological infrastructure of the Montreal metro while accommodating future network developments.
Alstom has signed an agreement with Sweden’s national rail operator SJ to supply 25 Zefiro Express electric high-speed trains, with an option of 15 additional trains. The contract for the first firm order is valued at around 650 million euros. The new trains will be Sweden’s fastest ever, capable of operating at maximum speeds of about 155 mph. The first train is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
