Cathcart Rail has completed its acquisition of The Andersons Inc.'s rail-car repair business. The sale follows The Andersons’ August 2021 announcement that it plans to exit the rail industry to focus on grain and fertilizer. Cathcart Rail has nearly 1,000 employees at more than 110 locations.
The Greenbrier Cos. logged new rail-car orders for 5,000 units valued at $670 million in its third fiscal quarter that ended May 31. The company's diversified new rail-car backlog as of May 31 was 30,900 units with a value of $3.6 billion, while the refurbishment backlog of 3,100 units was valued at over $220 million (not included in the backlog). Greenbrier’s net earnings in the quarter were $3.1 million, or 9 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $794 million.
Union Pacific Railroad has joined Cyclyx International, a consortium-based, post-use plastic innovation company that seeks to increase the recyclability of plastic from 10% to 90%. UP Vice President of Industrial, Marketing and Sales Jaqueline Bendon will also join the Cyclyx executive advisory board. The move is part of the Class I’s implementation of its environmental, social and governance strategy.
Pandrol has supplied an ultrasonic rail testing kit to SBS Transit Ltd. in Singapore. The kit uses high-pitched waves to identify track defects, with a full track inspection providing location, characteristics and urgency information. SBS maintains multiple passenger-rail services in Singapore and will use the equipment as part of its rail management and maintenance program.
