Vale and Wabtec Corp. announced a new performance=management agreement that will increase the reliability and operational safety of EVO locomotives on the Carajas Railroad in Brazil. As part of this agreement, Vale will invest $1.77 billion (in Brazilian real) over the next 10 years to increase the availability and reliability of locomotives through a technical consulting service that will identify and anticipate preventive and corrective maintenance actions on the railroad's trains. Wabtec will analyze performance data from the last three years at the railroad and monitor 5,000 parameters of the EVO locomotives operating on the railway. The data is sent in real time to Wabtec's Monitoring Center in the United States to evaluate opportunities for continuous performance improvement and optimization of the maintenance cycle, reducing towing and failure rates, Vale officials said in a press release.

HNTB has hired John Hong as construction project director. Hong is based in the firm's Los Angeles office and supports regional projects, including the California High-Speed Rail construction packages. He has more than 30 years of experience in construction management. He has spent much of his career with the California Department of Transportation, most recently as senior construction engineer. Hong also served as an instructor for Caltrans, teaching construction procedures and standards.
