Keolis Commuter Services, which operates and maintains the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter-rail service, completed over 125 capital infrastructure projects in 2024, according to a Keolis press release. The company replaced 17 miles of rail, upgraded 9 miles of the rail network between Reading and Boston, replaced 18,000 ties and began construction of accessible mini high level boarding platforms at several stations. MBTA and Keolis also piloted a new laser train in fall 2024 to clear sticky debris from leaves. Last year also marked Keolis’ 10th year operating and maintaining the MBTA commuter line.
The Greenbrier Cos. reported financial results for its 2025 first quarter, which ended Nov. 30, 2024. The company posted net earnings of $55 million, or $1.72 per diluted share, on revenue of $876 million, compared to Q1 2024 results of $31 million net earnings, or $0.96 per diluted share, on revenue of $809 million. During the Q1 2025, Greenbrier also grew its lease fleet by 1,200 units for a total of 16,700 units with a utilization of nearly 99%. It ordered 3,800 units, valued at $520 million, and 6,000 units were delivered, resulting in a new rail-car backlog of 23,400 units with an estimated value of $3 billion.
Hitachi Rail is suing the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) for nearly $335 million over delays in the Skyline project, according to a report by KITV 4 Island News. The complaint claims HART mishandled the project, causing delays and impacting the cost of the contract.
Stadler Rail has signed a contract with Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ), a Swiss passenger-rail company, to renew the signaling systems at the Tavannes and Orange stations in the Bernese Jura. The contract is worth $4.3 million Swiss Franc. Stadler’s eurolocking electric interlocking safety systems, which are already in place at other stations, will be installed at the two stations. This is part of the CJ’s project to modernize half of its Tavannes-Le Noirmont line by 2027.
Rail Vision Ltd. obtained a purchase order for its MainLine product from one of the leading Central America freight-rail operators, which was not identified in a press release. The order will support a proof of concept to demonstrate the MainLine’s capabilities to enhance rail safety with real time object detection, AI classification and long-range vision sensors.
