Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight
On Sept. 1, Burlington Northern Santa Fe plans to implement an electronic supplier-payment process.
Because the railroad and its suppliers will transmit and receive information electronically, the process will help prevent errors and smooth invoice payment, according to a prepared statement. The process also is designed to improve suppliers' cash flow, speed customer/supplier requests and enable BNSF to transition to a paperless payment system.
Currently, the railroad is requiring all suppliers to submit material purchase orders and related invoices in an electronic format. The Class I recently sent letters to suppliers outlining process changes and expects to mail follow-up letters next month.
