Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight
Today, Balfour Beatty announced plans to consolidate most of Balfour Beatty Rail Inc.'s Pittsburgh operations at the subsidiary's Jacksonville, Fla., office.
Balfour Beatty Rail's financial services, project procurement, human resources and general administrative functions now performed in Pittsburgh will be transferred to Jacksonville. The move will affect 19 of the company's 505 employees, who will be offered transition benefits and outplacement assistance.
"This is a difficult but necessary step in order to enhance our competitiveness in the railway services market," said Balfour Beatty Rail President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Carlin in a prepared statement, referring to the job cuts. "In addition to accelerating the timing of planned growth programs, [the plan] will also align operations to enable improved responsiveness, increased efficiencies and highly focused customer support."
Balfour Beatty Rail — which offers trackwork, signaling and maintenance services to railroads — plans to maintain a regional Pittsburgh office to serve short-line and industrial customers.
