Bombardier Transportation and joint venture partners Power Corp. of Canada, and China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Industry Corp. recently were awarded a $28.8 million contract to deliver 38 high-grade intercity passenger cars to China’s Ministry of Railways.

Manufactured in Qingdao, Shandong province, the cars will operate on the Beijing-Shanghair, Beijing-Harbin and Beijing-Guangzhou lines, and be designed to reach speeds of about 100 mph. Delivery of 21 sleeper and 17 dining cars is scheduled to begin in February.

In 1999, Ministry of Railways ordered 300 of the cars from joint venture Bombardier Sifang Power Transportation Ltd. Eighty-two have been delivered and are in service on the Shanghai-Hangzhou, Shanghai-Nanjing and Shanghai-Qinhuangdao lines.
