Bombardier Transportation recently obtained a $44 million contract to design and manufacture 22 bi-level commuter-rail cars for Montreal’s Agence Metropolitaine de Transport.

The aluminum cars will provide 70 percent more passenger area and 30 percent operating cost savings compared with single-level cars, according to a prepared statement.

The cars will be designed with 150 seats and have standing-room accommodations for 215 passengers.

Expected to be delivered in late 2004, the cars would be used on the Montreal/Dorion-Raigaud line.
