On Jan. 29, Bombardier Inc. announced plans to reorganize its rail transportation group.

The company will split president and chief operating officer responsibilities into separate positions. Bombardier Transportation expects to name a new president by the end of March; in the interim, President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Tellier will continue serving as president.

Bombardier named Wolfgang Toelsner chief operating officer, responsible for the North America, Total Transit Systems, Light Rail Vehicles, Locomotives and Freight, Propulsion and Control, Rail Control Solutions, Bogies and London Underground Department divisions.

The company also eliminated its industrial division, which was responsible for the European manufacturing network. Manufacturing facilities now will become part of the respective product divisions, enabling each division to have direct responsibility for marketing, sales, engineering and production, according to a prepared statement.

The company’s Mainline Division will be expanded to include the Metros and Carbodies divisions.

All Bombardier Transportation group staff will continue to report to the president.

"We believe this new organization will improve project management, accountability [and] customer service, reduce overhead and duplication, and simplify the organizational structure," said Tellier.
