The Great Canadian Railtour Co. recently finalized an agreement with Colorado Railcar Manufacturing L.L.C. to purchase one single-level Grand View diesel multiple unit (DMU) and two single-level Grand View coaches.

The self-propelled DMU will feature an open viewing platform on the rear of the car. Colorado Railcar custom designed the vehicle to raise the passenger area 30 inches, and create an under-floor, end-to-end luggage and storage compartment. The coaches feature 360-degree domes.

The railtour company plans to use the DMU to operate Gold Leaf service between Whistler and Prince George, British Columbia, and Jasper, Alberta; one coach to operate Red Leaf service between and Whistler and North Vancouver, B.C; and the other to operate Red Leaf service between Whistler, Prince George and Jasper.

Meanwhile, Colorado Railcar is building a double-deck observation car for Alaska Railroad Corp. Scheduled to be complete in spring 2005, the car will feature an open air platform on the upper level and a domed ceiling covering the entire car. The railroad plans to operate the vehicle between Anchorage, Denali and Fairbanks.
